One of the great things about open-source software is the ability to reuse handy classes written by other people. But sometimes, you find yourself using a class that doesn’t have quite enough features for what you’re trying to do. What’s the best way to deal with that sort of situation?

I was recently surprised to notice an area where orthogonality and consistency suggest the existence of an arithmetic operator which (to my knowledge) no programming language offers.
Most of it was just as you’d expect: a description of the Ruby landscape, and the places it works well. But buried here are there are one or two comments that just make no sense whatsoever.
